George is an old neighbor of mine in Chicago. An immigrant from Bulgaria, a mechanical engineer who worked for Caterpillar in Egypt and Muammar Kaddafi's Libya when he was younger. Since Bulgaria is next door to Turkey, he even knows a few words in Turkish! Calls me "my neighbor" in Turkish every time he sees me, yells "merhaba komsu" (hi neighbor)
He always fed the stray cats in the alley, he believes they are holy animals. I wonder if he developed that belief back in Egypt. Even after being forced to move out of his one bedroom apartment due to high rent under new ownership, George kept coming back, twice a day, everyday to feed the stray cats. He lived alone, cats were his kids. He did manage to get almost two dozen cats to get their shots and neutered.
Update Feb. 14 2016: Now it's winter time, George is serving only dry food to his cats due to very cold temperatures freezing the canned cat food risks them to go hungry until he comes back.
